A stroke (also called a brain attack) happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel bursts. In many cases, the body gives warning signs days or even weeks before a major stroke. Recognizing them early can save your life.
Here are 10 warning signs you should never ignore:
1. Sudden Weakness or Numbness
Especially on one side of the body — face, arm, or leg.
You may notice:
- Drooping on one side of the face
- Trouble lifting one arm
- A “heavy” or numb feeling
2. Temporary Vision Problems
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Sudden loss of vision in one eye
These may last a few minutes and go away (often a TIA — mini-stroke).
3. Slurred or Difficult Speech
- Trouble forming words
- Speaking unclearly
- Difficulty understanding others
If speech suddenly changes, treat it as urgent.
4. Severe, Sudden Headache
A sudden, intense headache with:
- No known cause
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light
This can signal a bleeding stroke.
5. Dizziness or Loss of Balance
- Trouble walking
- Loss of coordination
- Feeling like the room is spinning
Especially if combined with other symptoms.
6. Sudden Confusion
- Trouble thinking clearly
- Difficulty understanding simple instructions
- Memory lapses
7. Unusual Fatigue (Especially in Women)
Some women report:
- Extreme, unexplained tiredness
- Weakness that feels different from normal fatigue
8. Short Episodes of Symptoms That Go Away
Brief stroke-like symptoms that disappear within minutes or hours may be a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) — a major warning sign of a future stroke.
⚠️ A TIA is a medical emergency even if symptoms stop.
9. Facial Drooping
Ask the person to smile:
- One side of the face may not move properly.
10. Difficulty Swallowing
Sudden trouble swallowing or choking unexpectedly can be a neurological warning sign.
Remember FAST
An easy way to recognize stroke symptoms:
F – Face drooping
A – Arm weakness
S – Speech difficulty
T – Time to call emergency services immediately
When to Seek Help
Call emergency services immediately if:
- Symptoms appear suddenly
- Even if they go away
- Even if they seem mild
Early treatment can prevent permanent brain damage.
